Great day today! I am not sure how much longer we will have Internet, so today's update might end up posting tomorrow. We didn't have power or Internet for most if the day.
John spent the morning taking practice tests in advanced reading comprehension. You can imagine my sheer excitement when he scored 40 correct out of 44!! Two that he got wrong were in the very first section and once he figured out his mistake he didn't make the same one again. :)
My friend Bill met a Haitian man who lives right outside the church gate. He has two degrees from Georgia Tech - and he knows algebra and stats and trig!! Score!!! I hired him to tutor John in math for 3 hours this afternoon. I think that was the best $30 I have ever spent! There is absolutely no way I could help him that much in math.
Over the past few days I have been trying - unsuccessfully - to get a picture of one of the many lizards that hang out by my room. This morning, John spotted one right next to his chair so he carefully picked up the camera to get a shot. I should have used video because he was sweet talking the lizard in attempt to get it to not move! It was hilarious!
I tried a Haitian specialty for lunch - and needed about a gallon of water to cool off my mouth!!! Picles (pick lees) looks like cole slaw but it is really a cole slaw on steroids! One small bite and I thought my tongue was going to fall out.
To end the day, Bill and I went to the bottom of the hill to see a gorgeous sunset over the mountain. It was jaw dropping - but I didn't get any shots on my phone - just the "big camera" as John and Bill call it.
After a grilled ham and cheese dinner, I spent some time giving Bill another Mac lesson - and working on a few grant proposals. With church at 6 am, I will be sleeping soon!
